a proposito di dieta Zona (dal forum di Barry Sears):
1-Minoxidil and the Zone
Q. I am a 38-year-old female with thinning hair on the crown. My doctor recommended that I start using Minoxidil (topical) to see if some of my hair would grow back. I am following the Zone and have lost weight and improved my blood profile. I take six of your fish oil capsules daily. Can you tell me if Minoxidil will negatively impact my Zone progress in any way?
A. The Minoxidil will have no impact on the Zone Diet, but the Zone Diet and fish oil should significantly improve the action of Minoxidil.
2-Hair loss
Q. My wife and I have been on the eating plan for six months and are very happy with the results, except for one. We are both starting to lose our hair. What can be done to prevent this. Thank you.
A. I would recommend adding fish oil to the diet. Not only will the hair loss probably stop, but you will see an increase in the hair thickness and possibly a return of hair color. This is due to effect of fish oil on cyclic AMP levels as I described in The Anti-Aging Zone.
3-Menopausal hair loss
Q. Dear Dr. Sears,
My question is about hair loss and why the medical field seems to treat hair loss which starts during menopause as unimportant. Many women would like your opinion as to why this condition occurs and what can be done to control it.
Thank you, Linda C.
A. Dear Linda:
Hair loss is usually caused by excess production of a metabolite of testosterone known as dihydrotestoserone. With menopause it is not uncommon to see testosterone levels increase in women as their insulin levels also increase. By adding extra fish oil to your diet (4-8 capsules per day), you will reduce any excess testosterone production and you should see an improvement in the quality of the hair.
4-Hair loss
Q. Dr. Sears,
I'm very concerned. I've read from several people on the net that they starting losing their hair after being on the Zone. This really scares me, as I already lose a little hair due to hypothyroidism.
A. Dear Tammy,
Hair loss is usually due to lack of adequate protein in the diet. I would suggest adding one to two additional protein blocks per day to the diet with appropriate extra addition of carbohydrate and fat to maintain the balance. However, another possibility is that excess arachidonic acid is being released from the adipose tissue with increasing fat loss. Arachidonic acid is the building block of ?bad? eicosanoids that can also cause hair loss. If you are seeing constipation or grogginess upon waking, then you can be sure that you are releasing stored arachidonic acid into your system. The addition of extra molecular distilled fish oil (2-4 grams per day) will solve that problem.
5-Hair color
Q. Hair color
In a recent New England Journal of Medicine there was an article about an unexpected side effect from a drug called Gleevec (by Swiss drugmaker Novartis), which is used to treat adult forms of leukemia: Color was being restored to gray hair. How might the eicosanoids be implicated in this happening? Might high dose pharmaceutical fish oil have the same side effect over time?
Conning
A. The restoration of hair color is one of benefits that many people observe with high-dose fish oil. This is probably due to the increased production of melanin caused by increased cyclic AMP, as I described in The Anti-Aging Zone.
6-Male pattern baldness
Q. Dear Dr. Sears:
Do you think living on the Zone Diet will combat the onset of male pattern baldness?Or maybe even help regrow hair?
Thank you, snag
A. Dear Snag:
Hair maintenance and re-growth is governed by the blood flow to the scalp and increasing the production of those hormones that stimulate new hair growth. ?Good? eicosanoids do both simultaneously. Therefore the Zone Diet coupled with high-dose fish oil offers the best possible approach to maintain healthy hair.
